OORI Unlocks Microsoft for Startups Resources for USC Entrepreneurs

Author – Ethan Bochicchio

Through its expanding network of external collaborators, the Office of Research and Innovation (OORI) has enabled USC founders to access Microsoft for Startups resources by joining the Microsoft for Startups Investor Network. This engagement offers benefits to Trojan entrepreneurs, including cloud credits, go-to-market support, and AI tools. By building these partnerships, OORI continues to expand the reach and impact of its support for early-stage ventures.

This opportunity was made possible through collaboration with Tina Sharkey and USC Iovine and Young Academy, creating a pathway that connects institutional innovation efforts with external platforms. OORI serves as a crucial link between external platforms and USC-affiliated entrepreneurs, broadening access to resources, capital, and growth opportunities. By enabling these connections, OORI enhances the university’s innovation ecosystem through partnership-driven impact.

Through this partnership, OORI grants access to Microsoft for Startups, positioning itself as a gateway for USC-affiliated founders to connect with a broader network of resources. These benefits include up to $25,000 in Azure credits, access to advanced AI infrastructure and development tools, and platforms like GitHub, Visual Studio, and LinkedIn. Founders also receive technical support and go-to-market assistance, along with entry into the larger Microsoft startup ecosystem. This enhances OORI’s role as a connector that links innovators with impactful resources.

OORI recently held an informational session to assist USC founders in activating Microsoft for Startups resources. Access is intended for USC-affiliated founders actively involved with OORI programs or within the broader innovation community, including students, faculty, staff, and alumni developing startups. This includes participants in initiatives such as the USC Techstars Accelerator, University Catalyst, and other OORI-supported programs. By focusing on those connected through these channels, OORI ensures access is provided through its ecosystem of support.

Access is managed by OORI and requires a specific application and validation process to confirm eligibility. Founders apply through the OORI portal (https://provost.sma.usc.edu/prog/usc-microsoft/), where their USC affiliation and active startup status are verified. Once approved, OORI provides an access code that founders can redeem on the Microsoft for Startups portal to activate their benefits. Access codes are distributed only through OORI and are not shared publicly, ensuring participation remains limited to vetted founders with active startups. Each code represents a trusted recommendation rather than open or automatic access, protecting the integrity of the program and preventing misuse.

OORI acts as a key connector for external opportunities, increasing non-dilutive resources for USC-affiliated founders, especially those developing AI-driven and software-enabled startups. By linking ventures to programs like Microsoft for Startups, OORI boosts the innovation pipeline from research to startup creation and growth. These efforts complement existing OORI initiatives, strengthening the office’s leadership in providing targeted support, fostering partnerships, and ensuring founders have access to essential tools and networks.

Looking ahead, OORI remains committed to expanding its network of external partnerships and identifying opportunities that deliver real value to USC-affiliated founders. By connecting innovators with carefully chosen resources, technical guidance, and ecosystem support, OORI highlights its dedication to founder success at every stage. Founders are encouraged to participate in OORI programs, leveraging this support network to develop their ideas and grow their ventures within a dynamic innovation ecosystem.
