The Research Strategy & Development (RSD) unit within USC’s Office of Research & Innovation (OORI) worked to support the nomination of faculty members for the 2024 nomination cycle of the Packard Fellows for Science and Engineering award.
The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering is a prestigious program established by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation. It provides early-career scientists and engineers with substantial financial support to pursue innovative research. Fellows receive $875,000 over five years to conduct independent, high-risk research that might not be funded through traditional channels. The program, founded in 1988, aims to recognize researchers at the start of their careers who show exceptional promise in advancing science and engineering. The fellowships are highly competitive, with universities across the U.S. nominating faculty members within the first three years of their academic careers. The fields covered include biology, chemistry, physics, computer science, and engineering, among others.
RSD and OORI are pleased to announce that Dr. Yasser Khan, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering in USC’s Viterbi School of Engineering, was selected as part of the 2024 class. The 2024 class comprises of 20 innovative early-career scientists and engineers, who will each receive $875,000 over five years to pursue their research.
RSD personnel worked closely with Dr. Khan to craft a compelling, competitive nomination package, one that successfully highlighted and displayed the impactful work he is leading at USC. “We are incredibly pleased to see Dr. Khan as one of the 20 selected Packard Fellows for 2024,” said Dr. Steven Moldin, Associate Vice President of Research Strategy & Innovation (AVP-RSI), “it is critical that we uplift our faculty members who are leading impactful, innovative, and groundbreaking work by continuing to pursue award, honorific, and fellowship pathways similar to the Packard Fellows program.”
The 2024 class included faculty from Columbia University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Cornell University, California Institute of Technology, University of Southern California, Johns Hopkins University, Pennsylvania State University, University of Pennsylvania, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Maryland-College Park, University of Texas-Austin, Northwestern University, Vanderbilt University, Stanford University, Harvard University, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago.
